Who are we?
 ​KWESI is a nonprofit organization that visits immigrants in the Mesa Verde detention facility in downtown Bakersfield and Golden State Annex in McFarland and advocates on their behalf. We work to end the isolation of immigrants in detention and provide emotional support through visitation and letter-writing and advocate for the abolition of ICE detention. We also provide immediate post-release aid in the form of food, clothing, travel supplies, and short-term shelter.

Our meetings are a great opportunity for any curious individual or media representative that would like to know more about what it means to be a KWESI volunteer.

How can you help now?

  • Become a pen pal to offer comfort to a detained individual. 
  • Assist with our Post-Release program, picking up immigrants when they are released from detention and ensuring they get back home to their loved ones.
  • Donate to our commissary and post-release programs
  • Visit someone at one of the four detention facilities in  Kern County (one in Bakersfield, two in McFarland, and one in California City)
  • Accompany an immigrant to their ICE check-in.

Donate to Migrants

Every dollar goes directly to helping immigrants!
Currently, many of our volunteers pay out of pocket to help those in need. It takes $500 to send an immigrant who has won habeas across the country to be reunited with their loved ones. $120 pays for a night in a hotel. $90 pays for a cell phone and service for a month. $20 helps feed an immigrant for one day on a cross-country trip. Every donation we receive is need and greatly appreciated!
